We meet at 6:30-7:30 EST. Please send me an email if you are interested and I'll send you the Zoom link. We'll sing a wide variety of songs and styles including rounds, traditional carols and folk songs. This is very informal. You can download this pdf of our holiday songbook.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7pva0hq3paaicsv/Community%20singers%20Holiday%20Book.pdf?dl=0

Carolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08408040171440876633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6553377870982378660.post-22782887451270046052018-06-01T21:16:00.001-04:002018-08-15T10:40:52.748-04:00Summer Community Singing Sessions
Here is a song I arranged for Community Singers. It also sounds nice on recorders. The recording has the bass part sung up an octave. Click here for the free pdf. I can also print it out as SSAT to match the recording if you send me an email. The photo is one of my favorites of my mom.
I would like to record some of our songs to post on SoundCloud. This is one I want to record. If you don't know it yet, this video will teach you your part and you can sing along with the ensemble at the end. Click here for the pdf file. The friend who introduced me to this song calls it a "soul charge" and I definitely agree. The Zulu word Shosholoza mean "Go Forward" and the words literally are about a train moving fast on the mountain. While the song was originally a call and response sung by workers riding the train to the mines, it has become an unofficial national anthem in South Africa. To me it is about joy and strength and energy. Enjoy!
We had a last minute recording session of Zach Thomas' song Forward Together at practice this week. Zach, Randy and Richard sang this song in the Moral Monday protests in Raleigh earlier this year. Please pass this song along and the sentiments that are expressed in these lyrics:

Should we let Jim Crow make it hard to vote
And push our country backward a hundred years or more?
Should the rich get richer on the backs of the poor
And push our country backward a hundred years or more?
Should there be a war against women anymore
And push our country backward a hundred years or more?
No, no, no, you've got to hear what we say
Justice is moving the other way.
Forward together and not one step back.

A song is still a song without the words. It may touch us in a different way. And poetry is music to me even though it doesn't have a melody in the way a song does. I tell my elementary school students that we always want to strive to make music, not just noise. I think this applies to choir practice, performance and life. A line from an Amy Grant song I listened to in high school comes to mind: "It's not a song 'til it touches your heart". We will keep striving to make our lyrics clear, but most of all we will strive to touch a heart each time we sing.
The Arrow and the Song
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
Here we are singing to Julie Rose from WFAE, our lone audience member. It's a shame they couldn't have put the free speech platform somewhere a little more accessible and a little less desolate.
After a few songs we moved to a spot outside the Westin hotel on Stonewall where we had lots of folks to sing to as they passed by. "This land is your land, this land is my land..." I think Woody would have been proud.
The Shrek vesion leaves out two of the verses that we sang with Dale last week and they are my favorites. I would like for us to sing this. It has a great message of peace and acceptance and a style that we do not have in our repertoire. Don't quite know how we would pull off the horn section. Any ideas?Carolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08408040171440876633noreply@blogger.com
